La Blogotheque, un concert a importer avec le Bowerbirds

While in New York last fall, we recorded some take away shows with the director, Vincent Moon, who is one of the fabulous. here are four videos for four songs of ours recently posted to LA BLOGOTHEQUE website. We walk around in une boutique de bonbon, ride in the rear a van, stand on a street corner, and walk the streets all in the lower east side. It was a pleasure to work with Vincent Moon.

Making things

It's spring and babies are being born everywhere. The airstream is shining silver and is at times more like an oven than a home. We have field mice, which is wonderful. They give us a strong sense of community while we go about our daily activites which include, but are not limited to, making things.

New songs are coming out of the green earth and fortifing their stalks with the sun and the rain and strong coffee from the mocha pot. Beth has a new print (featured above). We are planning tours here and there and will announce them as soon as we can.

'Danger at Sea', sinking

We have decided that as soon as 'Hymns for a Dark Horse' is re-released on Dead Oceans we will quit sewing together our first EP, 'Danger at Sea', and selling it online or maybe we will sew a few more together and just sell those, which ever comes first, I guess. It is difficult to keep up with the sewing and either way, all good things do come to an end. If you want 'Danger at Sea', you can still order it from us for a limited time (look for link above and to the left).

Bowerbirds sign to Dead Oceans, get awards, stay warm!

Even though the nighttime temperature *inside* the airstream dropped 20 degrees below freezing this week, we remain warm and happy, because of all these nice things:

We have signed to our favorite US record label, Dead Oceans, home to such bands as Dirty Projectors, White Hinterland, Evangelicals, Citay, Phosphorescent, and Bishop Allen.

Dead Oceans will re-release Hymns for a Dark Horse, the album we sort of released last summer, but which never made it to more than 8 or so record stores in the whole United States.

They will release it on CD -- and vinyl -- and put it in stores this spring -- and the new version will come with two new top-secret bonus tracks.

And, It Snowed on our Airstream!!!

One of most beautiful things we have ever seen was our small submarine of an airstream peeking through the trees, as we made our way home from a nighttime walk through the woods last week, under a full moon, snow falling and softly blanketing its silver roof, the tiny wood stove inside pumping a low arc of smoke down the hill, and the oil lamps glowing orange through the foggy windows.

It's a good winter, all in all.

We just got back from a five-week tour with John Vanderslice, the Mountain Goats, and a few dates on our own. We drove all the way around the U.S. and into Canada for a few days.

And then we go out again with the Mountain Goats for a Midwest tour from late October through mid-November! See the shows page for details.

And some sad news: Bowerbirds leave Burly Time Records

After some recent things that have happened with our label, we have decided that we need to leave Burly Time. For now, we will continue releasing our e.p. and l.p. ourselves, and you can still buy them from the links at left, in stores, or at our shows.

spring 2007

Hymns for a Dark Horse available now!

So, our new full length is available for pre-order (Look to your left and down a little bit). We've moved some of the songs around on our mp3 player so everyone can figure out what's going on.

You can either buy the actual CD by clicking on that little CD at below left, you can buy it from your local indie record store (or get them to order it, through Revolver), or you can buy the digital files at Other Music.

Cover art for the CD is made by Eric Amling, and the inside booklet has drawings by our own Beth Tacular. Beth and Eric also just had an art show together at Wootini Gallery in Chapel Hill, NC.

Also, the new Venus is out and they reviewed our cd. We think that's great.

Our mini tour has come to a close, which is sad, but it was great to play nightly with the Rosebuds. Our show at the Bowery Ballroom was almost too fun.

We want everyone to know that Mark plays much more than just a bit part in our band. He plays the violin, piano, the bass drum, and now fills crevases that we could not have before imagined being filled with his feet and synthesizers! Oh yes, and he recorded our new album. He is a sweet man and is invaluable. Other things that Mark can do: He plays in another band named Ticonderoga, builds furniture, paints on canvas, restores houses, climbs on rocks, runs triathalons, does yoga, is a great cook, knows about wine (he is a waiter), seems to invent new words (that acctually exist, but hardly anyone knows about, not even Beth), etc.

Burly Time CD release party!

Horseback and the Bowerbirds have the CDs. Burly Time is bringing the party. You can just bring yourselfs and a guest, maybe, and maybe some cash to buy our cd. We're putting out a cd on May 4th for all the triangulartors. It will be called, "Hymns for a Dark Horse." The cover art will be pieced together by an amazing collage artist, Eric Amling. The messed up thing is that this guy is also an amazing poet. He's also our good friend which is even more messed up with how bad we've been with keeping in touch with people since moving to the country.

So, we are releasing this cd with our burly wing mates, Burly Time Records on May 4th at 305 South, a music venue in Durham, NC. You might know the place as the Untidy Museum (it is also a consignment store / extravaganza) or you might not know it all, mouse yourself here or drive here. This will be a dual cd relese show with our label mate Horseback. He's brilliant and infectious and makes me want to drive a Cutlass Cruiser down an old gravel road outside my hometown in Iowa with my best friends. There are also a few other acts that we are hoping will want to come join us.

Sets by:
Bowerbirds
Horseback
Des Ark
Heather McEntire (Bellafea, Un Deux Trois)
Megafaun
Pykrete

CDs available for pre-order online now!

For non-local fans who can't wait to hear the new album, we've got Bowerbirds' Hymns for a Dark Horse and out label mate, Horseback's Impale Golden Horn for pre-order on the Burly Time shop page . The CDs will be mailed out right after the CD Release Party on May 4, so you'll get them a couple months before they hit stores nationwide. Lucky you!

Bowerbirds go on mini-tour with the Rosebuds

From May 18th to the 24th, Bowerbirds hit the road with Kelly, Ivan and friends for a few shows in Asheville, NC, Washington, DC, Philly and New York! More info on the shows page.

Oh yes, look, new song our mp3 player.

summer 2006

The Bowerbirds have been travelling all summer long, foraging around for shows here and there. They started in Raleigh, NC in late April and travelled west, and all around for the last couple months.

They have hiked up Bear Mountain near Boulder, Colorado. They have slept under a full moon in White Sands, New Mexico. They have met wonderful folks in Tucson, AZ and sung their tiny little songs there. They have travelled north from southern CA all the way to Bellingham, WA watching the giant burning sun set over the ocean each night. They have taken their red eyed mini-van across the Cascades of Washington, across the Rockies of Utah and Wyoming and wound up in Northern, MN. They even made it to New York City, where they have been eating lots of delicious food.

Life has been good and free, and, although the duo has some shows scheduled in New York, it will soon be time to nest again. Their wings are slighty battered and in need of some repair. Soon, the birds will be drinking cocktails with their friends on the silky sands of North Carolina. Click here to see where the birds are playing in the near future.
